HOW TO FIND BOOKS AND JOURNALS
BOOKS AND DISSERTATIONS
Borrowing
You will first identify the title of a book you want using
library catalogs,
bibliographies, or other sources. Once you identify
a title, you may want to check SBGI Library catalog first. Then
check your local public library or a
university or college library where you have borrowing
privileges.* They may have the book on their shelves. If not,
your public library may be able to get it for you through
interlibrary loan, and it's usually free.
BOOKS FROM PUBMED, MEDLINE, ETC.
For books identified using Medline on Pubmed, HealthStar,
Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or other databases
published by the National Library of Medicine, you can
request interlibrary loan service (Loansome
Doc) at your nearest
participating medical library.

JOURNAL ARTICLES
Borrowing
You will probably use databases,
or bibliographies, or other sources to identify journal
articles that you want. If SBGI does not have the
journal article you want, there are a number of ways to
find it:
If you are in California you can check:
Melvyl to see which University of California libraries
own the journal, or check one of the Cal State University libraries near you. Then you can go in and use that journal in their library.
You can order the journal article on interlibrary
loan through your local public library, or any library where
you have interlibrary loan privileges.
You can try to locate an electronic copy on a full-text
database that you may have access to. See Jake
Enter a journal
title into the Jake search screen. If a message comes
up saying "full-text # databases", click on "complete
details" to see which databases include full-text of
this journal and for which dates.
A few journals are available for free on the Web.
You can check to see if your title is one of them, using
a search engine.
For journal articles that you identify using Medline
on Pubmed, HealthStar, Complementary and Alternative Medicine,
or other databases published by the National Library
of Medicine, you can request interlibrary loan service (Loansome
Doc)
at your nearest
participating medical library.

*Despite developments in the electronic delivery of information,
access to the physical collections of academic research libraries
is essential to graduate level research. Individual
consultations are held with each student to determine which
additional resources in their home communities to point them
toward for in-depth research.
