Santa Barbara Graduate Institute
Admissions
The mission of Santa Barbara Graduate Institute is to provide excellence
in graduate education, research and leadership in the emerging fields of
prenatal and perinatal psychology and somatic psychology. Each degree program
offers in-depth theory and application of the specialty and experiential
learning, as well as important therapeutic skills within a humanistic/transpersonal
framework.
The Institute’s intent is to help students
integrate their life experience into professional skills and apply their
graduate training and education into future employment opportunities.
We believe that the greatest contribution each person
can make emerges when they express their unique nature, authoring their
contribution from their authentic self. When an individual finds coherence
between their uniqueness, life purpose, talents, strengths and patterns
of being and the expertise in the work they do, there is a synergy of aliveness
and authorship that transcends technique or approach. This is where one’s
passion and inspiration flourishes and excellence is manifest.
The depth and intensity of SBGI Master’s and
Doctoral programs requires students to be mature, well functioning, self-directed
and receptive to continual growth. They also call for clear and critical
thinking, intellectual curiosity, interest in theory and research, and
sound writing skills.
General Admission Requirements
The admissions process is selective, but not competitive. Students must
have a Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited or state approved
institution. SBGI does not require standardized tests, e.g. the Graduate
Records Examination (GRE).
Ph.D. program applicants may possess a Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s
Degree. If the student is applying to a Ph.D. program with only a Bachelor’s
Degree, they will earn the Master’s Degree along the way. After the
student completes requirements for the MA Degree, including the Master’s
Project, they are allowed to enroll in the third year of study at the doctoral
level. If the student chooses both the MA and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology,
further coursework is required in the fourth year.
While maintaining rigorous standards for admission relative to professional
and personal attributes, the Institute’s admission process emphasizes
those qualities that measure a student’s aptitude for success in the
program. Focus is on the personal interview, letters of recommendation, past
educational and career performance, and written work by the applicant, including
the admissions essay.
The Institute welcomes applications from international students. They must
submit transcript evaluations prepared by a professional agency, such as
Educational Credentials Evaluators, Inc. or World Education Services. All
classes are conducted in English. If English is not their native language,
students must also submit the results of the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL). A score of 550 paper-based or 213 computer-based or above
is required for admission. No visa services are offered at this time.
We welcome applications from all qualified persons regardless of race, color,
gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, disability, marital
status, age or religion. The Institute does not discriminate in any of its
admission policies or procedures, or any other academic activity.

Financial Aid
Financial aid is available in the form of loans and partial scholarships for
students who demonstrate need. An earnest attempt is made to extend a personalized,
concerned approach to student financial needs while complying with governmental and
donor regulations.

origin, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, or phisical ability in any of its policies
pertaining to the award of financial aid.
Loans
SLM Financial is the lending agency through which SBGI students receive educational loans.
Please speak with the SBGI financial aid office to learn how to obtain a student loan application from SLM.
The Harry Chapin Memorial Scholarship
Background. SBGI’s scholarship is named for Harry Chapin, the noted musician best known for his
hit “Cat’s in the Cradle.” Harry was committed to sharing his success by donating about half of his
time to performing at benefits, and he encouraged his colleagues to do the same. In looking for an
inspiration for how to create abundance through a program of giving, SBGI saw Harry Chapin as a role
model. As SBGI alumni who have benefited from the fund contribute to the scholarship, the number of
scholarships provided each year will increase.
The Program. Each year SBGI donates the equivalent of three full-tuition scholarships divided
among six or more students who are enrolled in the coursework phase of their degree programs. Because
the Institute believes that students value their education more when they assume some of the financial
responsibility, the maximum scholarship awarded to a student in any given year does not exceed half of
his or her annual tuition.
A committee of two or three volunteers who have no formal affiliation with SBGI but who understand
the school’s mission convenes each year to make the allocation decisions. An independent committee is
charged with this task to ensure that the scholarships be awarded by those who are objective and to
maintain students’ privacy.
The committee bases their allocation decisions on the number of scholarship applicants and the quality
of their applications. Further, it seeks, if possible, to distribute funding about equally among PPN
students and SOM students, on the one hand, and students in the first year, second year and third year
of coursework, on the other.
Prior to each of the three years of coursework, students interested in being the recipient of a
Harry Chapin Memorial Scholarship need to submit an application. Students awarded funding one year
may or may not receive a scholarship in subsequent years. Likewise, those denied funding one year
may or may not be awarded money in subsequent years.
How to Apply. To apply for a scholarship, students need to (1) complete the Harry Chapin Memorial
Scholarship Application form, which can be downloaded from ,
(2) attach a copy of their 1040 tax form for the last two years, and (3) include a written narrative
that provides the following information: (a) who you are, (b) why you are requesting the
scholarship, (c) what makes you a worthy candidate for the scholarship, and (d) a description of
how you intend to give back to the fund. Materials may be sent with your admissions application or
mailed separately. For consideration, all materials must be postmarked by August 1.
SBGI Minority Student Scholarship
The Program. To increase the representation of members of groups historically excluded from
graduate education and under-represented in the fields of PPN and SOM, SBGI donates each year
the equivalent of up to two full-tuition scholarships to African-American, Hispanic, and Native
American students with a demonstrated financial need.
A committee of two or three volunteers who have no formal affiliation with SBGI but who understand
the school’s mission convenes each year to make the allocation decisions. An independent committee is
charged with this task to ensure that the scholarships be awarded by those who are objective and to
maintain students’ privacy. The committee bases their allocation decisions on the availability of funding,
number of scholarship applicants, and the quality of their applications.
Prior to enrolling SBGI, students interested in and qualified to be a recipient of a Minority Student
Scholarship should submit an application as described below. Before each subsequent academic year, they
are required to submit the previous year’s 1040 tax form in order to demonstrated continued financial
need. Provided that they demonstrate a legitimate ongoing need and depending on the availability of
funds, students awarded a Minority Student Scholarship before starting their degree program may expect
continued funding through graduation.
Minority students in the second year or beyond who were previously ineligible for the scholarship
but whose financial circumstances have changed such that they require supplemental funding to continue
their education may also apply. However, priority will be given to those previously awarded the scholarship.
How to Apply. To apply for the scholarship, students need to (1) complete the Minority Student Scholarship
Application form, which can be downloaded from the SBGI home page catalog and application download link (2) attach
a copy of their 1040 tax form for the last two years, and (3) include a written narrative that provides the
following information: (a) who you are, (b) why you are requesting the scholarship, (c) what makes you a worthy
candidate for the scholarship, and (d) a description of how you intend to give back to the fund. Materials may
be sent with your admissions application or mailed separately. For consideration, all materials must be postmarked by August 1.
Students are encouraged to seek all possible sources of funding. Numerous
private groups, such as civic organizations, corporations, unions, religious
and ethnic groups offer grants, scholarships and/or loans.
Students should not pay for a scholarship search. There are many free listings
and databases of information available on the Web. Try www.finaid.org or
www.fastweb.com or www.collegenet.com to begin your search.
